Muscle Shoals — The Muscle Shoals Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the meeting agenda, previous minutes, the consent agenda, a personnel report and five board policy amendments at its regular meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Holden said the district’s enrollment is “around 2,950,” and he told trustees a bid for HVAC upgrades to an athletic facility will be opened Thursday; he said the board can expect a recommendation to accept or reject the lowest responsive bid at the next meeting.
The personnel report the board approved listed multiple hires, transfers and supplemental assignments. New and reassigned staff named in the packet included Summer McClintock, secretary/bookkeeper at Muscle Shoals Career Academy; Velvet Black, reassigned from school counselor at Muscle Shoals High School to counselor at the Career Academy; Christy Mitchell, reassigned from a shared counselor role at Highland Park and Webster to Muscle Shoals High School; Kelly Morrow, moved from a paraprofessional role in STEM/media to coordinator of the community education program; and Becky Jayco, named interim community education coordinator through the end of the semester. The board also approved after-school tutors, an English-learners tutor for the middle and high schools, a middle-school website manager funded by middle-school funds, and coaching and activity supplements including an assistant indoor track coach and assistant football coaches. Several positions listed in the packet were informational only (Kelly Services placements and medical leaves) and were not action items.
Board policy changes labeled items 1 through 5 were approved as a block after the superintendent said the Alabama Association of School Boards had provided certificates confirming the board’s good standing and that required training was complete. The superintendent also said he had consulted with AEA and MSEA on the policy revisions and reported no objections.
The board recognized student ambassadors from Muscle Shoals High School — Hudson Jones, Ethan Ray and Diamond Eggleston — and Superintendent Dr. Holden congratulated teacher Beth Ann Crowe for being named the Shoals Chamber teacher of the month.
