Natural Resource Board readies fall outreach: Touch & Tour, International Coastal Cleanup, Kids Fest and Christmas parade

The Natural Resource Board used its Sept. 2 meeting to finalize participation and programming for a series of fall and winter outreach events, including a Touch & Tour family event on Sept. 13, the International Coastal Cleanup on Sept. 20, Sebastian Kids Fest on Oct. 4 and the Dec. 6 Christmas parade.
Touch & Tour: Staff described the Sept. 13 Touch & Tour event (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and asked for volunteers to staff two shifts for setup and teardown. Board member Frank Trinkle proposed a hands-on "Stormwater Superhero" kids activity that demonstrates how different surfaces (gravel, pavers, planted soil) affect runoff and how runoff can carry pollutants to the lagoon. He proposed certificates for participating children and a short activity route of five stations.
International Coastal Cleanup: The county-wide cleanup is Sept. 20 (9 a.m. to 11 a.m.). Staff asked board members to arrive early for setup and site leads will provide additional briefing details. The National Estuary Program said it will host a salinity-science activity at Riverview Park during cleanup day.
Sebastian Kids Fest (Oct. 4): Board members volunteered for multiple shifts to staff activities. The board also discussed staffing and materials (stickers, seed packets and temporary tattoos) to hand out, and confirmed returning activities such as a car-wash fundraiser and kid-focused exhibits.
Christmas parade (Dec. 6): The board discussed a tropical theme and float logistics; members suggested handing out seed packets and eco-friendly giveaways rather than single-use plastic. Staff will coordinate float details and any generator or sound needs.
Why it matters: The events are part of the board's public-education and volunteer-recruitment work. The Stormwater Superhero activity aims to teach children how landscape choices affect runoff and water quality in the Indian River Lagoon.
Staff asked members to confirm availability as event dates approach and to register where required for county-run events.
