City reports 0.41 tons collected in countywide Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup; volunteers, unusual items noted

City staff told the Natural Resource Board on Sept. 2 that the Marine Industries Association of the Treasure Coast has returned final totals for the recent Treasure Coast Waterway Cleanup.
Within Indian River County, cleanup participants collected 0.41 tons of debris and 165 people participated, staff said. The overall regional cleanup totaled 3.93 tons with 1,206 participants. In the City of Sebastian specifically, volunteers removed 0.4 tons and 55 participants were recorded.
Why it matters: The counts provide a short-term metric of local littering and shoreline debris and inform planning and outreach for future cleanups.
Staff said volunteers found a wide range of material; unique items were noted at other locations, including a butterball turkey. Some board members asked whether any of the collected items could be recycled or repurposed rather than sent to landfill; staff said the local event logistics did not include vetting each recovered item for reuse and that contamination and degradation often limit recycling options.
Board discussion also raised the prospect of targeting heavy items such as anchors or recovered gear for recovery programs and of coordinating future events with organizations that can accept reusable materials. "There may be items that could be recycled in the future," staff said, adding that the committee will raise the point with the Marine Industries Association.
Staff thanked board members and volunteers for participating and said they will continue outreach and cleanup efforts throughout the year.
