Council approves abatement and nuisance resolutions for several Prattville properties

The Prattville City Council adopted consent-agenda resolutions authorizing the mayor to abate overgrown grass and weeds at multiple addresses and to declare a property a public nuisance and abate garbage and rubbish at another address.
The resolutions, adopted as part of the consent agenda by voice vote, authorize the mayor to abate nuisances at 1142 East Main Street, 1157 Falk Avenue, 1385 Twins Place, 819 Wilberforce Avenue, 333 Janice Street and 810 Martin Luther King Drive for overgrown grass and weeds pursuant to Chapter 46 of the Prattville Code of Ordinances. Another consent item declared garbage and rubbish a public nuisance at 103 Guilford Lane and authorized abatement and charging incurred expenses under the same chapter.
Resident Brad Bolger spoke during the public hearing supporting abatement for several properties he inspected and said some were owned by out-of-state companies that had allowed properties to decline. "They're not from Alabama though," Bolger said when describing absentee owners; he asked council to consider harsher penalties for out-of-state owners who let properties fall into disrepair.
Why it matters: The actions allow the city to clear hazards and nuisances and recover abatement costs. Residents said they wanted the city to prevent harm to working-class neighbors and reduce blight.
Next steps: City staff will proceed with abatement processes and bill property owners for costs as permitted by Chapter 46 of the Prattville Code of Ordinances.
