Several council members urged a coordinated review after a series of incidents linked to youth-sports activities at city facilities.
Council member Mitch summarized recent incidents and requested a formal committee to address safety, saying: “I do wanna have a discussion. ... That coach was shot on the property of, guess we gotta figure out if that's NPS or Montgomery, I mean, or the city, but they was at McIntyre. I do wanna have a discussion ... I will, mister president, ask for a a committee, and regular meetings so we can discuss and bring everybody to the table.”
Another council member said she supported Mitchell's concerns and described language and conduct witnessed at some venues as not “family friendly,” saying she had observed disruptive behavior at Goodwin Junior High School and called for broader involvement of school and city leadership.
Why it matters: Incidents involving violence or disruptive behavior at city and school athletic events raise questions about facility oversight, interagency coordination and public-safety response. Councilors asked for a committee to bring city staff, school officials and other stakeholders together to reduce future incidents.
Next steps: Council member Mitch asked the chair to establish a committee and schedule regular meetings; staff or the chair will need to formalize membership and a schedule. The transcript captures the request and expressions of support but does not record a formal vote creating the committee.
