The Dothan City Commission approved an application for a restaurant retail liquor license on the premises for Fat Backs, located at 3850 West Main Street, Suite 801. The clerk announced a motion and second, and after a voice vote the motion carried.
On a separate application for a Class 2 lounge retail liquor package (off-premises) for Star Package at 1023 South Oak Street, community member Nate Patterson spoke in opposition, citing proximity to Dothan Prep and a youth center and expressing concerns that additional liquor outlets can increase crime near schools and youth-serving facilities. Patterson said the area has ongoing problems with loitering and underage drinking, describing a recent incident he witnessed near another store.
After public comment, there was no motion and no second on the Star Package application; the clerk announced the item "dies" for lack of a motion and second. No formal vote was taken on the Star Package item.
The Fat Backs approval and the lack of action on the Star Package application were both recorded by the clerk during the Sept. 2 meeting.
