County parks official outlines repairs, new Flatwood playground and storm-shelter opening plan

Parks staff reported that the county's summer recreational programs have ended and outlined a series of maintenance and improvement projects across county parks.
Planned work includes tree removal and ball-field maintenance at South Montgomery parks, ordering safety wood chips for playgrounds beginning Oct. 1, and trail repair and fencing work at the Flatwood Community Center. Parks staff said a new playground was installed at Flatwood last week and that a 16-by-24 pavilion slab has been poured.
Regarding storm-shelter operations, emergency-management staff told the commission the shelter itself is complete and has passed its final inspection but requires concrete work, handicap accessibility improvements and grading for parking before it can be opened to the public. Emergency-management staff said they will develop an operations plan, determine access procedures and coordinate outreach to residents about shelter use in advance of peak severe-weather seasons.
Commissioners asked when staff would present a plan to the community; emergency-management staff said they planned to return with a game plan and hoped to have operational details in time for the next meeting.
