The Huntsville City Council on Aug. 28 approved a finance committee resolution authorizing expenditures of $29,230,483.04 and received an update from finance staff indicating the city remains fiscally stable.
Penny Smith, finance director, reviewed July financial results and said sales and use tax receipts were slightly behind the prior year but tracking near a revised budget baseline. Smith said selected revenues — including interest earnings and some license fees — were ahead of budget, while permit revenue has moderated after recent large projects. She told the council that personnel and departmental expenditures were under the elapsed‑year benchmark and that overall liquidity and reserve levels remain strong.
Council members thanked department heads for fiscal stewardship. Smith reminded council members that the mayor’s budget would be introduced at the next meeting, followed by a work session and formal vote at the end of the month.
The council approved the expenditures resolution on a motion; the motion carried without recorded opposition.
