Board agrees to consider Victims of Communism resolution; discussion centers on curriculum overlap

The school board voted 4–1 on Sept. 9 to place a proposal to adopt a Victims of Communism Memorial Day resolution and related curricular recommendations on a future agenda for further review.
Board member Miss Dombrowski asked the board to reconsider adopting the resolution and suggested classroom resources or a day of instruction to increase student understanding of communism’s historical impacts and contemporary consequences. She cited national polling about youth attitudes toward socialism and communism as motivation for the proposal.
Several board members supported the idea in principle but asked for a staff review of existing curriculum to avoid duplication. Mister Vaught, Miss Cunha and Mister Reimer said they supported the concept but wanted the administration to identify where the subject is already taught and how a resolution or additional materials might supplement current instruction rather than duplicate it. Superintendent Nichols said topics related to communism and government already appear in middle- and high-school civics, U.S. history and world history standards.
The board voted to put the proposal on a future agenda for staff to evaluate curricular overlap and possible resources. The motion carried 4–1, with Mister Pagano recorded as the lone dissenter.
