Career Academy enrollment tops 797; board reviews several operational policy and facilities items

Board members received a joint report on the Technical Career Academy (TCA) and reviewed multiple operational items during the Sept. 9 meeting.
Committee members reported that TCA, a partnership between Lincoln Public Schools and Southeast Community College, has record enrollment at 797 students with more than 60 nonpublic students participating this semester. Committee members said enrollment may exceed 800 in the spring and noted student interest in additional pathways such as an auto mechanic sequence and a student lounge suggestion raised by seniors Aiden, Ben and Dominic.
The committee reported strengthened corporate partnerships and named Stonebrook Roofing and Grama Trucking as supporters for SkillsUSA activities. The committee also described a parking issue that delayed a district bus and said SCC and LPS worked together to revise traffic procedures to prevent recurrence.
On operational agenda items, board staff presented revisions to policy 3760 (safe driving record standard for drivers) to codify existing medical-examination practices and align policy language with rules and regulations. Staff described the changes as updates that "do not change what we do; it just aligns the policy with what's required to be in policy." The board indicated the item will proceed to second reading.
The board also reviewed updates to the 4000 series human resources policies, described by staff as changes made in response to legal and regulatory requirements, updated job titles and committee input.
Separately, staff reported an incremental facilities project to add lighting to the Northwest Activities Complex baseball field; staff said the work was funded from identified opportunities and is one step in addressing previously unmet amenities.
Consent-agenda routine business and human-resources items were approved by roll call earlier in the meeting. No expedited or emergency board actions were taken on Sept. 9.
