The Lincoln Public Schools Board of Education voted on Sept. 9 to approve a $25,000 grant application to the Woods Charitable Fund to support the district's STRIVE program, which provides tutoring and mentoring for English learner students.
Mike (federal programs staff) told the board the funds would supplement STRIVE at Lincoln High School, where the district houses summer school and serves the largest population of EL learners. He said there is no matching requirement for the grant but asked the board to waive second reading because of the application timeline.
A board member moved approval of the Woods Charitable Fund application and the board voted to waive second reading. The roll-call votes recorded in the minutes were: Doctor Johnson Farr yes; Missus Krivilovic yes; Miss Mumgaard yes; Mister Chbosdov abstain; Miss Beyer yes; Mister Goodwin yes; Doctor Rauner yes. The motion to apply for the grant and waive second reading therefore carried with one abstention.
Board members did not attach conditions to the application in open session. Staff indicated the funds, if awarded, would be used to expand individualized tutoring and bilingual mentor pairing for EL students at Lincoln High School and during summer programming.
The board did not specify implementation details beyond using the funds to supplement STRIVE at Lincoln High School; staff will proceed with the application consistent with the board's vote and with the grant funder's requirements.
