Commission selects redesigned playgrounds at four parks; Measure X funds project

The Corona Parks and Recreation Commission on Tuesday reviewed proposed replacement playground designs for four parks and agreed on final options so staff can apply for a manufacturer grant and proceed to procurement.
Project manager Miss Martin said the four playgrounds were identified in a 2020 park assessment and that the replacements are fully funded by Measure X sales tax. "The project's fully funded by measure x sales tax," Martin told the commission as she presented two design options for each site.
Commissioners selected the following options: Mangalore Park (Option 1), Butterfield Park (Option 1), River Road Park (Option 2) and Brentwood Park (Option 2). Staff said the playground manufacturer is offering a grant program that requires design selections in order to apply; the grant deadline cited in the presentation is October 17.
Designs incorporate inclusive elements and additional shade structures. Staff said the procurement schedule would include final construction documents and a planned bid process late in the year or early next year, with construction following award.
Commissioners requested minor modifications as part of final design work, including additional benches, selected inclusive swings and extra shade plantings. Vice Chair Boggs moved the commission’s recommendation, Commissioner Munoz seconded, and the motion passed 5-0.
Action: The commission approved staff to finalize selected designs and pursue the equipment manufacturer grant and procurement process.
