City staff briefed the Oroville Parks Commission on a potential grant opportunity from the National Fitness Campaign that would subsidize installation of an outdoor fitness court and adjacent activity space.
Alyssa Stutz, identified in the meeting as staff, said the Campaign could provide a grant between $30,000 and $50,000 toward a full-installation cost of about $250,000. "So we'd still be looking at needing to cover about $200,000 or be able to raise about $200,000 in order to, that that the city would need to come up with on top of the potential grant," Stutz said. She suggested using upcoming community events such as the Salmon Festival for outreach to gauge local interest.
Stutz told the commission the units are designed to support body-weight and group fitness and often come with an app-based workout program. She said similar installations exist at Yuba College, Lincoln and Redding and that staff would evaluate visibility and accessibility when selecting sites (Bedrock, Nelson Sports Complex and River-adjacent parks were mentioned as possibilities).
Commissioners discussed usage patterns in other communities, funding options including supplemental benefit or SBF funds for non-city sites, and the risk that such amenities occasionally lose popularity over time. Stutz said staff will continue to investigate locations, funding options and community support before making formal recommendations to the commission or council.
No formal action or funding commitment was taken at the meeting.
