HANOVER — At the Hanover Area School District Board of Education meeting on Sept. 9, board leaders and the superintendent gave an update on the district’s planned new elementary center, saying construction of a consolidated facility is expected to generate substantial savings compared with other options.
Board members said the district’s best projection is that building the new elementary center will save approximately $40,000,000 in construction costs versus alternatives. “What isn’t funny is the fact that we're going to save tens of millions of dollars, and the projection at this point is about 40,000,000,” the board president said during the district report.
Superintendent Barrett and board members credited extensive planning work by the administration and contractors. The update noted that construction planning is advancing and that the district expects to begin the construction process soon.
Board members emphasized the broader goals for the project: to provide modern learning space and to steward taxpayer funds by pursuing the cost-saving option. The superintendent also linked the project to broader district trends, saying enrollment growth and a rising share of students qualifying as economically disadvantaged—comments made in the superintendent’s report—underscore the importance of updated facilities.
The board said it intends to host a community night in the near future to present plans, review projected savings, and answer questions from residents.
