Volunteers seek reorganization of historic Friends Cemetery; town could take over care

A member of the public told the Town Board that the Friends Cemetery beside the Creek Meeting House in Clinton Corners is no longer functionally organized and that a meeting is set for Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Creek Meeting House to attempt reorganization.
The commenter said the cemetery has been managed informally by volunteers for decades though it was incorporated in 1912; records prior to the 20th century are meager. The speaker said New York State’s Division of Cemeteries provides inspections and guidance, that the corporation’s bylaws date to 1912 with amendments in 1986, and that the cemetery was intended to be run by plot owners (the corporation’s directors). The commenter said the body historically had nine trustees but currently had only two active trustees and that oversight has drifted in recent decades. If the community is unable to reorganize the cemetery, the speaker said the town would inherit responsibility for management, maintenance and upgrades.
