Forney ISD FFA students ask board to expand excused days for competitions

Catherine Winslow, who identified herself as a Forney ISD FFA member and district officer, described how participation taught her leadership, budgeting and responsibility and invited trustees to attend FFA events. "FFA is not just an organization. It is an experience that changes lives," Winslow said.
Paige Brock, who said she has been involved with Forney ISD FFA for eight years, asked the board to revisit the policy. Brock said the 10-day limit treats agricultural students differently from athletes and can jeopardize scholarship and career opportunities tied to judging contests and livestock projects. She cited a statistic she attributed to Texas Tech that "82 percent of students who have taken an FFA course state that their high school performance impacted their career decision," and asked the board to expand the allowed days for agricultural competitions.
The board did not take action during public comment; the speakers were directed to the grievance process for personnel complaints and the board reiterated meeting decorum rules.
