Forney ISD board approves amendments to District of Innovation plan

Dr. Stormy Lamont, Forney ISD chief of staff, presented proposed amendments to the district’s District of Innovation (DOI) plan and recommended the board approve them. Lamont said the DOI process, adopted in 2015, allows local districts limited exemptions from certain provisions of state law to increase local control.
Lamont said the District of Innovation Committee — comprised of campus and district administrators, teachers and community leaders — met in August and voted unanimously to advance the proposed revisions. The committee recommended removing the exemption for a behavior coordinator (which the district can no longer exempt, she said, citing recent legislative changes) and adding four amendments related to grievance policy and procedure, commissioner-standardized GPA rules, acquisition and appeal of library materials, and planning and preparation time.
Lamont said, once the board approves the amendments, the administration will draft administrative regulations to clarify how Forney ISD will implement each change. Board member Dr. Edamudia moved to approve the amendments; the motion passed on a voice vote with no opposition.
