BVSD celebrates state accreditation with distinction; superintendent highlights Grad PLUS partnerships and new reporting resources

Superintendent Patrick Anderson opened his remarks at Tuesday's meeting by announcing that Boulder Valley School District earned Colorado Department of Education accreditation with distinction for the second year in a row and that BVSD set a new high mark on the district performance framework for the front range.

"Accredited with distinction is Colorado Department of Education's highest honor," Anderson told the board, and he noted that many BVSD schools are now at the state's top rating for school performance. He singled out Columbine Elementary for recent gains, moving from priority improvement to improvement status.

The superintendent connected the results to district strategy and supports. He said BVSD's work on differentiated funding and targeted interventions is yielding growth for historically vulnerable groups. "If you were to compare our district to other districts, across the metro, our free and reduced lunch students have the highest median growth percentile of any school district on the front range," Anderson said, citing progress for multilingual learners and students qualifying for free and reduced-price lunch.

Grad PLUS and career partnerships: Anderson highlighted career-connected learning examples under the Grad PLUS initiative. He described an Apex culinary program collaboration in which students worked alongside chef Jose Rosenberg of Blackbelly in BVSD's culinary center before a Denver food-and-wine event. He also noted the Boulder Mod net-zero modular construction partnership that will place two stacked modular units in the Ponderosa community in North Boulder and said construction-trades students participated in the build.

Communication and reporting: Anderson described website updates including a "Make a Report" link and newly posted guidance about investigation processes and the limits on what district staff can disclose in investigations. He said the district will continue to refine how it communicates timelines and constraints to families.

Community Leadership Academy: Anderson urged residents to apply to the BVSD Community Leadership Academy (application deadline Sept. 18), a district-run civic-education program for community members who want to learn more about BVSD operations, schools and pathways to future service.

Ending: The superintendent thanked BVSD staff and educators for the results reflected in the accreditation and asked the board and community to continue partnerships that support sustained improvement.
