Commissioners request public litigation updates from assessor; no schedule yet

Kootenai County commissioners used a Sept. 9 status update to press the assessor’s office for a public schedule for an update on a pending assessor-related lawsuit. Commissioners said email exchanges are not an appropriate substitute for a public meeting because they do not allow board dialogue in an open, noticed forum.
At the meeting a commissioner asked the assessor to provide quarterly or semiannual updates on the litigation and clarified that the assessor’s counsel may appear by phone to save travel time and expense. Commissioners said they had previously tried to set a date with the assessor and requested the assessor work with his counsel to find a date that fits the board’s calendar so a public update can be provided.
No hearing, settlement or other court action was reported at the Sept. 9 meeting. The board’s direction was procedural: to re-schedule a public update and to receive periodic updates without requiring commissioners to request them repeatedly.
