Teachers and union leaders raise enrollment paperwork problems; teacher seeks sign to recognize student habitat work at Cronin Derby Downs

Kim Hatfield, a teacher at Flint Southwestern, told the board she and students have worked with the city and conservation partners for about 13 years on a habitat-restoration project and asked the board to approve a sign at Cronin Derby Downs adjacent to Southwestern to display student work related to a state-recognized vernal pool.

Karen Christian, president of the United Teachers of Flint and a teacher at Potter Elementary, raised two operational concerns during public comment: she asked the board to continue an existing letter-of-agreement practice that provides duty-free lunch for GSRP staff, and she flagged an enrollment-processing problem that has left some students enrolled physically in classrooms but not entered into the district’s electronic attendance system.

Why it matters If students’ enrollment paperwork is not uploaded to the district system, teachers cannot take attendance and state reporting can be affected. Christian said she has two students in her classroom “since day one” for whom she cannot take attendance because their paperwork has not been uploaded. The issue was raised during public comment and trustees and staff discussed follow-up responsibilities.

What the board did The board later considered and approved Action 11.18, an authorization for a new sign at Cronin Derby Downs Park, during the same meeting. Board members expressed support for the park and the Flint Soapbox Derby’s renewed activity near Flint Southwestern Academy and said the sign would support student work visibility. Enrollment processing concern Karen Christian said the district has allowed parents a window to submit documents; some parents turned in documents but those records had not been uploaded into the enrollment system. She urged the district to identify and fix the centralized-enrollment issue promptly so students can be counted for attendance and state reporting.
