Board committee reviews learning initiatives: total-experience program, STEEL standards and calendar redesign

The Dover Area School District’s Educational Excellence Committee discussed several instructional initiatives during its Sept. 9 meeting, including a total-experience learning program, updates to STEEL standards and a revised school calendar format.
Director Miller reported the committee examined a “total experience” learning program that another district has used in partnership with local colleges to expand project-based learning and career-linked coursework. Miller said Superintendent Dr. Hauck (name in transcript) has attempted to contact Alvernia University to explore potential local partnerships but had not yet received a response.
Committee members also received an overview of new STEEL standards and accompanying curriculum maps. The district’s curriculum staff described a KUD (Know-Understand-Do) approach to writing unit maps and pacing guides so substitute teachers or temporary staff can step into a classroom with clear guidance. The committee noted kindergarten and fifth-grade pilot materials showing hands-on learning aligned to the STEEL standards and indicated the board will review those standards for approval.
Directors discussed a new visual calendar format the superintendent proposed to make the annual schedule easier to read; staff will convene a committee to draft next year’s calendar in the new format.
No formal votes were taken on curriculum items at the Sept. 9 meeting; the committee will bring completed standards and curriculum maps to the board for approval in upcoming meetings.
