Board briefed on replacement freezers and $436,043 tax-appeal payment owed to Home Depot

The district’s business office presented two budget-and-finance items for the Sept. 30 approval meeting: replacement freezers for three schools and a tax-appeal repayment to Home Depot totaling $436,043 covering 2020–2025.
Jack (business office) said three schools — March Forks and Shawnee among them — have freezers that failed and require replacement. Each location will receive one two-door and one one-door freezer at approximately $9,764 each, a total near $29,000. Jack said the cafeteria fund will cover the purchases.
On a separate item Jack summarized a tax-appeal settlement involving Home Depot (Palmer Township). He said the district previously negotiated assessed values and at this point owes $436,043 for appeals covering 2020 through 2025; years 2014–2019 were waived. Counsel has advised that a lump-sum payment is preferable to tracking credits on future tax bills because credits are difficult to administratively manage.
Board members asked whether other properties in the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) area also faced appeals and whether the district’s exposure might grow. Jack and administration said they will follow up. One board member urged public visibility on the repayment and suggested residents note which businesses benefit from appeals when they shop.
What’s next: replacement freezers and the tax-appeal payment will be placed on the Sept. 30 approval agenda; administration said it will provide additional documentation and follow-up answers on related TIF questions before the meeting.
