Hardeman County School Board elects Bobby Henderson chair, Deanie Atkins vice chair; approves agenda and minutes

Bobby Henderson was elected chair of the Hardeman County School Board during the board’s Sept. 9 organizational meeting, and Deanie Atkins was elected vice chair, the board said. The board also approved the meeting agenda and adopted minutes from its Aug. 12 meeting.

The nominations and elections took place under the board’s Policy 1.201, which the board clerk read into the record, explaining that "at the first regular meeting in September, the board shall organize by electing a chairman and a vice chairman to serve 1 year terms or until a successor is named." The board opened the floor to nominations before taking a roll-call vote for chair and vice chair.

A majority of board members voted to elect Henderson as chair by roll call. After the vote, Henderson thanked members for their support, saying, "Thank you very much, and thank you for your vote of confidence." The board then opened nominations and elected Deanie Atkins as vice chair by roll call.

The meeting proceeded to routine business. A motion by a board member to approve the agenda carried on a voice vote. The consent agenda — which included the Aug. 12 minutes — was approved after a motion by a board member and a second; the board voted in favor and the motion carried.

The newly elected chair and vice chair will assume the duties listed in Policy 1.201, which the board circulated and made available to members during the meeting. No changes to officer duties were proposed at the Sept. 9 meeting.

Items acted on at the start of the meeting were procedural and organizational; the board moved next to other agenda items and a public-comment period.
