Salem reports hiring gains, apprenticeship pilot and fewer new teachers than prior years

Conrad said two teachers arrived on J‑1 visas from the Dominican Republic and are taking part in new-teacher orientation. She also described the district’s participation in the state pilot for a registered teacher apprenticeship program (RTAP) focused on special education: three mentor teachers have been selected as full-time mentors to apprentices, and the district is finalizing selection of the apprentices.
The district reported that roughly 30 staff who were on waivers or provisional licensure were rehired with commitments to pursue licensure; HR confirmed a continued partnership with Salem State University and additional pipeline work to support multiple pathways to certification. School Committee members asked for a future data update on counts of staff on waivers and those pursuing alternative licensure pathways.
