McAlester council adopts changes to off‑street parking rules

The McAlester City Council voted to adopt an ordinance amending city code Chapter 62 to revise off‑street parking and loading standards.
City officials said the draft updates relax some of the city’s more restrictive parking requirements and align several standards with common practices used elsewhere. The Planning Commission reviewed the draft and recommended approval at its Aug. 19 meeting, requesting one change: lengthening the required parking stall from 18 feet to 19 feet to better accommodate larger vehicles. Council members said the change was the only substantive edit recommended by the commission.
Councilors moved the ordinance to a public hearing, then approved the ordinance in a roll call vote. The ordinance did not carry an emergency clause and therefore will take effect 30 days after adoption.
Council discussion on the item emphasized that frequent variance requests at Planning & Zoning and the Board of Adjustment had created regular conflicts under the city’s previous standard. One council member described the ordinance as a “band‑aid” to ease recurring permit denials while a more comprehensive overhaul is planned.
No members of the public spoke during the hearing on the ordinance. The council’s action was taken during the scheduled business portion of the meeting and was recorded as a formal vote.
