Monroe gas and electric divisions honored with industry awards, city staff say

At its Sept. 9, 2025 meeting, Monroe City staff told the City Council that the city’s natural gas division received the Silver Trust Award from the Carolina Public Gas Association and the electric division received a Public Power Award of Excellence, staff said.

Rob Miller, representing the city’s energy services work, said the Silver Trust Award "recognizes organizations in the gas industry who demonstrate excellence in training, safety, community outreach, environmental responsibility, and transparency." He said the award reflects the city’s "commitment to public safety, system reliability, investment in employees through robust training and development, dedication to community service, including outreach to underserved and bilingual populations, and stewardship of environmental resources."

Miller also said the electric division earned the Public Power Award of Excellence in three strategic areas: "strengthening public power, providing superior power, and people." He said the electric operations manager and the deputy general manager accepted that award at their annual meeting last month. Miller said the natural gas award was accepted this week by the gas system manager and the manager of engineering.

Council members thanked staff for the recognitions. No formal council action was taken on the awards during the meeting; the items were presented as recognitions and informational updates.

The presentations were followed by routine agenda business and a short consent vote later in the meeting.
