Western Band Association seeks use of Collegian Stadium; administration to place request on Sept. 23 agenda

District staff presented a facilities-use request Sept. 9 for use of Darren Collegian Stadium by the Western Band Association. Justin Garza High School and Central East students would host and compete in the championships; director Rodriguez said the association has used the stadium in prior years and that administration will return the item to the Sept. 23 agenda for board approval.
Kevin Tinkle, band director at Justin Garza High School, described the program's rapid growth and the importance of hosting championships locally: "In 4 years, our program at Justin Garza High School has earned several accolades and awards locally and statewide... hosting championships last year... was really a banner moment in our short history." He asked the board to support placing the facility-use item on the Sept. 23 consent agenda.
Administration said the association would be charged the nonprofit rate per Board Policy AR 13-30 and that the request only seeks use of the stadium and adjacent parking (the soccer complex parking lot) for cyclical event scheduling; the soccer field itself would not be used for performances. Staff said site athletic directors sign off before final approvals and that the board would see the request for formal action on Sept. 23.
Ending: The item will return for board action on Sept. 23. Trustees thanked the band director and staff and asked that the site calendar and conflict checks be completed before formal approval.
