San Benito CISD board proclaims Sept. 22–26, 2025 as National GEAR UP Week

The San Benito Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to approve a proclamation recognizing National GEAR UP Week for Sept. 22–26, 2025 and to highlight the district’s federally funded GEAR UP partnership.
"I, Dr. Ariel Cruz Vela, president board of trustees for San Benito CISD, do hereby proclaim the week of September 22 to the 26, 2025 as National GEAR UP Week in San Benito CISD," Dr. Ariel Cruz Vela read during the meeting as part of the proclamation presentation.
The proclamation described GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) as a federally funded competitive grant program that provides six- to seven-year grants beginning in middle school to increase postsecondary readiness for low-income and first-generation students. The proclamation states San Benito CISD’s GEAR UP program serves 646 eighth-grade students and noted a partnership with Region 1 Education Service Center.
Trustee Crystal Hernandez moved to approve the proclamation and Trustee Rudy Corona seconded the motion; the board approved the item by voice vote.
District officials said the proclamation will be posted and shared districtwide and that recognition events for students and coordinators will take place during the designated week. The district also introduced student leaders and GEAR UP coordinators from participating campuses during the meeting, and principals and families were invited to be recognized.
