Fire chief details station repairs, equipment needs; several apparatus paid by ARPA

City of North Lauderdale Fire Chief David Sweet told commissioners the fire-rescue fund in the proposed 2026 budget increased principally for three reasons: contractual personnel costs, building and equipment repairs, and capital equipment replacements.

Sweet said the department absorbed contractual salary increases and that several major repairs are driving budget increases. At Station 34 he described failing windows that leak in storms and a sinking rear equipment apron that requires substantial work; staff estimated station repairs could be large-scale and involve engineering and construction contracts. Chief Sweet said Station 44 needs a generator and transfer switch replacement after a grant request was not approved; the budget added funds so the work could proceed.

On equipment, Sweet said the department budget includes replacement of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and associated decontamination washers; he noted regional FEMA and state safety grants have been sought to cover some of the cost and, if awarded, would reduce the local budget need. He also described plans for apparatus purchases funded through ARPA: a fire engine, a rescue unit, and a ladder truck (the ladder truck is scheduled later in the multi-year procurement). Sweet said ARPA funding was used in part so the cost would not be shifted to residents through a higher fire assessment.

Sweet emphasized state safety inspections and NFPA requirements that drive replacement cycles for protective gear and pumps and told commissioners many repair items are needed to maintain current service and safety standards. He told commissioners staff will continue to pursue available grants for SCBA and other items but built contingencies into the budget if grants are not awarded.
