Road department: encroachment permits down, bridge maintenance and silane treatment underway

Dwight Morgan, speaking for the county road department, told the fiscal court the department saw encroachment permits fall by about one‑third through July and August, which he attributed in part to higher interest rates affecting residential construction.
Morgan said daily work continues: mowing, trimming, tree trimming and replacement of cross tiles (culverts). The department has undertaken increased bridge maintenance and is treating some newer bridge concrete with a silane solution intended to protect embedded rebar from water intrusion. He said asphalt resurfacing was limited during July and August while the department waits for fiscal-year funding to become available.
Morgan said sign replacement and other routine repairs were near last year’s levels. He flagged one major cross‑tile replacement that must be completed before new paving can proceed and said funding remains a constraint for some projects.
