Council approves substantial completion for Florida Parishes Arena building; tables proposed rate changes

The Tangipahoa Parish Council on Sept. 8 approved staff recommendation that the Florida Parishes Arena multipurpose building reach substantial completion and later voted to table an ordinance that would change operating fees for the Florida Parishes Arena and Event Center.
During the parish president’s report, staff told the council that architects and project staff were satisfied with the multipurpose building project and recommended acceptance of substantial completion. The council approved the item by roll call (9-0).
Councilwoman Mayhew moved to table the operating-fees ordinance and asked staff member Lane to review the fee figures and present a more feasible proposal. “I would like... make a motion to table it and ask mister Lane to go back and look at some of these figures and see if he can come up with something that’s more feasible for the people,” Mayhew said. Her motion to table passed by roll call, 9-0.
Council members discussed the arena’s capital investment, with one member noting the parish had spent “well over 3,000,000” to build and maintain the facility. Members agreed to convene a group of council members and administration staff to review fee proposals so the ordinance would not be repeatedly tabled.
The council did not adopt new fee levels at the Sept. 8 meeting and directed staff to meet with council representatives and stakeholders to refine the proposal before the public hearing set for Sept. 22 at 5:30 p.m.
