Commission members discussed a large, heavy wooden Lake Pend Oreille sign currently stored behind the museum and outlined steps to refurbish and reinstall it.
What commissioners said and recommended
Chairwoman Ellie Sesnes and other commissioners reported the sign is large, heavy and needs at least two people and a bigger truck to move. The sign previously hung at the Chamber of Commerce and has metal reinforcement on the back and chain attachment points; one decorative chain had broken and the sign was removed for safety. Commissioners discussed potential permanent locations including City Beach, the Snack Shack south wall, the loading/boat ramp area and Hickory Park, and emphasized keeping the sign and work close to City Hall while final siting is decided.
Refurbishment plan and timing
- Commissioners and staff said the wood is dried and will need a preservative/stain and repainting of the lettering (blue and white are the noted colors). They discussed using a local artist/volunteer for the painting and obtaining three quotes for any printing/contracted work when SURA funds are used. - Parks staff indicated fall would be the better season for moving and installing the sign since crews have more capacity after summer; commissioners agreed to pursue refurbishment this fall and to coordinate with Parks (Austin named as a parks contact) for moving and possible construction of a new framework if needed.
Implementation steps
- A commissioner will contact a local artist volunteer to inspect the sign and report back to the commission. - Parks staff and the commissioner(s) will assess mounting options (wall mount on Snack Shack, metal posts, or a simple bolted concrete footing) and confirm equipment and crew availability for moving.
Ending
Commissioners agreed to inspect the sign in place behind the museum and to coordinate volunteer painting and Parks support with the aim of completing work this fall if volunteer availability and parks scheduling allow.
