Residents ask Bellflower to ease Parks & Rec class registration; staff to explore pass options

At public comment during the Sept. 8 Bellflower City Council meeting, a resident urged the city to change registration practices for recurring Parks & Recreation classes — suggesting multi-class passes or prepaid cards to avoid repeated drop-offs in attendance and lost revenue for instructors.
The speaker said weekly line-dancing classes often draw 20–30 participants in normal weeks but recently had as few as eight, and proposed options such as monthly passes or a card that deducts a class each visit. The speaker praised Parks and Rec staff and asked the council to consider alternatives to per-class registration.
PJ Milano, director of Parks and Recreation, responded that class and contractor payment structures vary by instructor and program. Milano said the city is implementing a new recreation management system that will enable more pass options (cards, multi-class passes, open-gym passes) and that staff will discuss the line-dance instructor’s situation with the instructor and review feasible options. Milano did not promise a change but said staff will look into it.
The council encouraged staff follow-up; no policy change or funding commitment was made during the meeting.
