Dauphin County seeks grant funding to update comprehensive plan; estimates $150,000 cost

County planning staff told the commission on Sept. 8 that the Dauphin County comprehensive plan requires an update and that staff are preparing grant applications to help pay for work scheduled to begin next year.
Jerry, a county planning staff member, said the county’s plan was completed in February 2017 and that the next 10-year update will cost roughly $150,000. Staff plan to seek about $75,000 from state funding and to pursue additional match through a gaming grant or county contributions.
Jerry said staff intend to front-load public outreach in the first six months starting in January so municipalities and stakeholders can shape priorities early in the process rather than only during the mandated public hearing at the end of the process.
Why it matters: A comprehensive-plan update shapes countywide land-use guidance and informs municipal planning, infrastructure priorities and future grant applications. Staff told the commission they may ask the planning commission to help with outreach events and to review surveys and materials during the early outreach phase.
