Council adopts standard operating procedure for cancellation of city events amid debate over who should decide

The City Council approved a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the cancellation of city events despite several council members expressing concern about decision‑making authority.
The resolution stated that the mayor and council approve the standard operating procedures policy for cancellation of city events as submitted. During discussion councilors said event organizers or members of the mayor/council should have a voice on cancellation decisions; one councilor argued that event coordinators for city events should be able to cancel or move a city event and that those affected by cancellations should have input.
Another council member said for the record that they believe someone from the mayor’s office or council should sit on the body making cancellation decisions and said they had raised the concern previously without it being addressed. The council nonetheless moved to adopt the SOP and approved it on roll call: Ross, Dupre, Baer, Nichols and Zor voted yes; Salcedo and Mayor Tobin voted no.
The SOP was adopted as presented. The council did not amend the policy during the meeting; members who raised concerns said they expect staff to consider input and to return with any recommended changes if needed.
