Troy High student government presents 'Ohana' theme, outlines events and committees

Student leaders from Troy High School described their 2025–26 student-government agenda to the Troy School District Board of Education, emphasizing an “Ohana” theme intended to boost inclusivity and school spirit.

The presentation, led by student government president Devonna Harris and adviser Jennifer Lemke, said student government will organize dances, homecoming hall decorations, winter formal, pep rallies and interactive games intended to engage a wide range of student organizations, not just athletics. Harris said committees for decoration, spirit and rallies divide the work of planning and execution and that the rally committee is the largest to support large events.

Senior class president Josie Lyon and other student representatives described participation requirements and election procedures: candidates collect signatures from peers to appear on grade ballots, returning members rerun each year, and a small number of "at-large" members can be added after elections to ensure an odd number for votes. Students also said leadership positions such as student body president and vice president are open to seniors who have prior student-government experience.

Harris and others said student government acts as an ambassador at community events and service projects, citing participation last year at a “Hug the Earth” festival and ongoing work with the Renaissance program to promote school identity. The students said they are working with school staff to produce a video explaining student-section etiquette at football games and that committees handle practical tasks such as t-shirt design and event cleanup.

Board members and staff praised the students’ inclusiveness and leadership. No formal board action was associated with the presentation; the item was a spotlight on student activities.
