Saline County adopts $73.6 million 2026 budget and special-district budgets

The Saline County Board of Commissioners voted Sept. 9 to adopt the county's 2026 budget, allowing Saline County to expend $73,566,347 and special districts to expend an additional $1,217,677.
County Administrator Philip Smith summarized the proposed budget and reminded the commission that the required public hearing on the budget had been completed earlier in the meeting. "This is, obviously something that we've had quite a bit of discussion on since May," Smith said, and recommended approval.
Commissioners thanked staff and department heads for multiple budget meetings and for trimming departmental requests. Commissioner Sparks said the process was difficult but produced a manageable budget and emphasized efforts to keep taxes down for citizens. Another commissioner said department heads "gave up different things," and praised staff for helping craft the budget.
During the public portion, Anita Chase asked whether the budget documents were available to the public; county staff confirmed the budget packet is on the county website and that printed copies are available in county offices.
Following discussion, a motion was made and seconded to approve the budget (recorded as RFA 2025-127 in the meeting transcript). The motion carried on a voice vote with all commissioners saying "aye." The county administrator said printed budget packets were available for commissioners and the public and that staff would provide copies on request.
No further budget actions were taken at the meeting.
