District reports new social-emotional learning program at AES serving six students; in-district option reduces outside placements

A district special-education staff member reported the SEL program launched in September and has expanded from three planned students to six enrolled students. The program includes a lead teacher and two paraprofessionals and provides individualized behavior plans and supports designed to move students toward inclusion in general education when appropriate.
Two students are partially included in general classrooms with paraprofessional support for transitions and classroom participation; the other students are primarily served within the substantially separate program. Administration told the committee the in-district program has avoided the need to place several students in out-of-district collaboratives and reduces transportation burdens on families.
Staff reported the program is stable for the current year and may require adjustments and additional supports next year depending on student needs. The committee asked about staffing ratios and the sustainability of the program; administrators said staffing is sufficient for this year and that the district will monitor needs as students progress.
