Animal Advisory Commission approves minutes and calls for follow-ups on shelter safety, budgets and large-dog policies

The Austin Animal Advisory Commission held votes and set follow-up items at its Sept. 8 meeting.

The commission unanimously approved the draft minutes from the Aug. 11, 2025 regular meeting. Commissioners then discussed and unanimously approved the commission’s annual internal review (the draft was amended during discussion to note public feedback and to clarify that commission actions support many stated goals in the commission’s mission). The commission also unanimously approved additions to the strategic-plan working group, adding two outside participants named during the meeting (identified in the meeting materials as Shelly Liebman and Pat Veil Treas) alongside Commissioner Norton, Commissioner Nelson and Commissioner Loignan.

Commissioners proposed and approved placing several future agenda items for staff follow-up and discussion. These included a staff briefing and discussion of the reported formaldehyde incident at the Austin Animal Center (commissioner request; staff agreed to provide an update), and a staff update and discussion about recent budget changes including the loss of an emergency clinic contract and the orthopedic surgeon contract. Commissioner Holt proposed forming a working group to examine large-dog–friendly housing policies and renter accommodations; the commission agreed to add a discussion-and-action item to consider forming such a working group.

Votes recorded in the meeting were unanimous on the items brought forward. Commissioners also used the meeting to schedule follow-ups and direct staff to provide additional materials and updates on the items above.
