Residents urge council to oppose ODOT overpass plan and ask for Cheshire Road crosswalk study

Edward Gifford, president of the Stratford Woods Homeowners Association (165 Beach Drive, Stratford Woods), said his neighborhood strongly opposes an Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) plan to build an overpass connecting Hawthorne across Route 23. He said Stratford Woods residents fear the overpass would turn Hawthorne into a high-traffic connector, degrading the street’s residential character and safety. Gifford told council the association mailed roughly 946 letters to state and local officials (241 homes participated) and asked the council for support and protection from the project; he described the proposal as likely to “wreak havoc” on Hawthorne Boulevard.
Becky Brucato of 45 Glenmar Circle (Landings of Glen Ross) asked council to act on a petition filed Aug. 26 by Becky Bercato requesting a crosswalk across Cheshire Road near the Landings of Glen Ross. Brucato said many residents walk and bike and that crossing Cheshire safely is difficult. City staff noted the Parking & Safety Committee discussed the petition and recommended returning it to Parking & Safety for staff evaluation.
Council thanked speakers and said staff has been meeting with ODOT and will follow up with petitioners and committee review. The petition will be processed through the Parking & Safety Committee and staff evaluation before council takes formal action; no ordinance or binding council direction was issued at the meeting.
