The Town of Brownsburg Board of Zoning Appeals approved a development-standards variance (BZDV 25-4) on Sept. 8 permitting a perimeter fence in the front yard of Brownsburg High School’s East Athletics complex at 1005 S. Odell Street.
Staff explained the request was for an exception to Chapter 5, Section 5.7 of the Unified Development Ordinance, which generally prohibits fences for institutional uses in front yards. The applicant requested a six-foot, black, vinyl-coated ornamental fence to control event crowds, secure the facility during off hours and separate spectators and players from South Odell Street.
Cameron Hall of Context Design presented the concept plan and said the portion of the fence that would lie inside the front yard is the subject of the variance; much of the perimeter fencing along sides and rear is permitted by right. Hall described the proposed fence as consistent with other ornamental fences at the school’s stadium and tennis courts and said the front-yard location is needed to integrate ticketing, concessions and restrooms with secure access points.
Board members asked about material durability and maintenance; Hall said the vinyl coating is a long-life finish typically warrantied for 10–20 years and that fence sections can be repaired or replaced individually if damaged. No citizens signed up to speak on this variance after the board reopened public comment earlier in the meeting. Staff recommended approval, and the board approved the variance (motion passed).
The public hearing closed after the vote. The applicant will provide construction-level details (final alignment, materials and warranty specifications) during APC review and the permitting process.
