Katy council ratifies emergency repairs and pre-purchase of Well No. 8 pumping equipment

The Katy City Council on Sept. 8 ratified emergency repairs and pre-purchase of pumping equipment for Water Well No. 8 at Water Plant No. 6, authorizing pre-purchase of equipment for $169,593 and replacement installation costing $56,672.
Dave, a Public Works staff member, told the council that crews first saw rumbling noises and brass shavings in the well water and moved to obtain competitive quotes and pre-purchase equipment so it would be on-site in case of failure. "We recommended to go ahead and pre-purchase that equipment and get it put on the shelf...upcoming well failure was going to happen," Dave said. He reported the well stopped producing water about two weeks earlier and that having the equipment on-site allowed Weisinger, Inc. to begin installation immediately.
Councilmember Roy Robertson moved the resolution to ratify the emergency repair and pre-purchase; Councilmember Janet Court seconded. The motion carried.
The contract under which the plant and purchase were managed is referenced in meeting remarks as board contract 672-22. City staff estimated installation would take about two weeks from the start of work.
The council’s action authorizes procurement and replacement expenditures to restore water production at the well and directs Public Works to complete installation and return the system to service.
