The proclamation noted that sending or reading a text takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of about five seconds, the equivalent of traveling the length of a football field at 55 mph.
Councilman Thomas moved approval; Councilman Hershey seconded. The council adopted the proclamation by voice vote. Staff said the city would publish the proclamation on the municipal website and work with the police department to promote safe-driving materials.
