Commissioner highlights Veterans Village outcomes and relays request for $100,000 to Advocates for Vulnerable Central Oregonians

A county commissioner on Monday reported progress at Veterans Village and relayed a funding request from Advocates for Vulnerable Central Oregonians.

The commissioner said she visited Veterans Village and learned three women veterans who had been homeless are now enrolled in the program; she said two-thirds of veterans who have gone through the program have "successfully graduated" based on a conversation with David, a program contact. The commissioner also reported that Advocates for Vulnerable Central Oregonians, led by Executive Director Janet Vasney, recently assisted 42 people, 75% of whom were homeless or at risk, and that Vasney asked the county to consider additional funding in the neighborhood of $100,000 to continue the work.

The commissioner said the Veterans Village greenhouse is built but not yet operating, and described the program as performing well in helping veterans into housing and supportive services. No formal request or agenda item was offered on Monday; the commissioner said she would bring brochures and further information to share with colleagues and asked staff to consider funding opportunities.

The board did not act on any funding at Monday's meeting; the request was presented as an item for commissioners' consideration and possible follow-up.
