Remodel at Schneider Electric cafe awaits local sign-off; contractor says it won’t return

District staff updated the Lake County Schools Board Sept. 8 on the Schneider Electric cafeteria remodel and said work performed under contract by Hope Construction addressed items flagged by a state fire marshal, but the local fire marshal had not yet signed the final approval.
Staff said plans had originally been submitted and approved at the Nashville office of the state fire marshal and that Hope Construction completed additional corrective work after the local authority raised issues. Hope Construction reportedly declined to accept payment for the corrective trips but also indicated it would not perform future projects in the county.
The superintendent said the situation stemmed in part from differences in inspection and communication protocols between state and local officials and lamented the contractor’s decision not to return. As of the meeting the project still lacked final local sign-off; staff said they were continuing communications with the contractor and the local inspectors.
The board received the update and asked staff to continue pursuing final approvals and to clarify cost and warranty impacts if the contractor declines future work in the county.
