Board approves timeline to study keeping some third graders in K–2 schools

The Lake County Schools Board on Sept. 8 approved a proposed timeline to study and, if warranted, implement a change that would keep some third-grade students in K–2 buildings for additional foundational instruction.
Staff said the change is driven by instructional needs: third graders who would benefit from K–2 reading and math supports (including resources tied to the CKLA curriculum) could remain in the K–2 environment where staff expertise and resources for foundational skills are concentrated. The timeline approved by the board calls for a parent and staff survey, a community meeting after fall break (staff mentioned Oct. 21 as a tentative date), a summary presentation at the November board meeting, a finalized logistics plan in December and a formal board vote in January so that any moves can be made for the upcoming school year.
Staff noted the logistics issues the board must consider if placements change, including staffing, nutrition and custodial assignments, classroom space, technology and transportation. The board passed the timeline motion, instructing staff to collect feedback and return with a detailed implementation plan if recommended.
Board members emphasized that third graders who are ready for grade-level advancement would still have that option and that the purpose of the timeline is to collect community input and produce a final plan for board consideration.
