The Lake County Schools Board of Education voted Sept. 8 to absorb an approximately 7% increase in the district's employee health-insurance premiums for the coming plan year and to reduce the employee monthly contribution from $113 to $100.
District staff told the board they had introduced an incentivized three-tier insurance structure (premium, standard, limited) last year and that limited employee uptake followed gaps in personalized outreach. A staff member said the district will send staff to schools before the Oct. 1 open-enrollment window to explain plan differences and cost tradeoffs so employees can make informed decisions.
During discussion board members queried affordability and budget impact; staff responded the district budget can accommodate the projected increase and that the change is intended to support employee retention and affordability. Board member Jimmy Dale moved the motion to absorb the 7% increase and reduce the employee contribution; Jody seconded and the motion carried on roll call.
Staff detailed that the district previously projected higher premium increases in prior years and emphasized the planned pre-enrollment visits to school sites to improve uptake and reduce confusion. No change to eligibility rules or plan tiers was passed — the board's decision addresses how the district will allocate an across-the-board premium increase for the coming year.
The staff member said outreach will include one-on-one conversations at each school and printed/email materials; finance and human-resources staff will update payroll deduction amounts and benefits summaries before the open-enrollment window.
