County authorizes supervisor to accept two FAA AIP grants for airport runway work; small state and local matches required

Berkeley County Council authorized the county supervisor Sept. 8 to sign and accept two Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants for runway improvements, with required state and local matches that county staff said are already budgeted.
County administration told the council that the first grant (grant number MKS34500410322025) totals $60,137 and requires a state match of $1,503 and a local match of $1,503. The administration recommended authorizing the supervisor to accept and sign the grant in the county’s name; Michelle Brown, the staff member listed on the agenda, was not present and administration said it would transmit the award on her behalf.
A second AIP grant on the agenda requires a $6,843 state match and a $6,843 local match; staff said those matches have been budgeted in previous fiscal years. Council members asked whether the funds remain with the county or go to Charleston; county staff responded that the county has set aside the funds in its fund balance and has applied for similar grants in prior years.
Both grant acceptances were approved by the committee by voice vote.
