USD 261 shifts some science standards to STEAM classes; report-card layout to change for 2025-26
Summary
The district will move many elementary science standards to STEAM teachers and update the report card layout; the transition is phased with some standards remaining with homeroom teachers for one year.
Haysville USD 261 staff told the board they will adjust elementary report cards to reflect a shift of certain science and technology standards into STEAM classes.
Superintendent Queen Reed and elementary staff said STEAM teachers now teach science standards previously handled by homeroom teachers. To reflect that change the district will update the report card: STEAM teachers will record grades for standards they now cover, and homeroom teachers will retain responsibility for a small number of remaining science standards (two or fewer standards in grades 3—5) during the transition. Staff described the change as a phased approach while the district fully implements Project Lead The Way modules and expands STEAM content.
Administrators said classroom teachers will keep an Excel tracking sheet of standards and scores; STEAM teachers will enter grades into PowerSchool. Staff said some technology standards remain with the homeroom teacher during the phased rollout, but as more modules are added the distribution of standards may change and staff will bring updates to the board if further transfers are proposed.
Board members asked clarifying questions about which year the homeroom teachers would give grades for specific items; staff said the red-marked items in the packet indicate those where homeroom teachers will give the grade for this transition year only.
