USD 261 reports more than 1,000 students attended summer programs; drivers education noted as high-demand

Haysville USD 261 reported that more than 1,000 students participated across nine summer academic and enrichment programs this summer, district staff said at the regular board meeting.
Superintendent Queen Reed and staff outlined program counts: 73 students attended a two-week "overtime" program to recover a narrow failing grade, producing 88 half credits; 41 high-school students took summer credit-bearing classes; 66 students received extended-school-year (IEP-based) services; 258 students attended K-8 summer exploration and enrichment in June; 219 students took part in a new summer reading-fundamentals program for K-4; 175 students attended Jump Start or kindergarten readiness offerings; 147 students participated in paired middle-school programs (Spark and Gear Up); the bridal program served about 33 students; and 112 students enrolled in driver's education. Staff said some students are counted in multiple programs and that total unique participation was over 1,000.
Staff emphasized that many summer programs provide free meals and that athletic and music camps also occurred. Board members raised the popularity of driver's education and asked staff to study whether expanded or year-round offerings might be feasible. Staff said they would explore scheduling and instructor availability and coordinate with district leadership.
